| What: | A foreign language program designed specifically for toddlers and children is expanding services to Sydney’s Hills Shire to meet popular demand. AlphaTykes introduces children 18 months to 12 years of age to French, Spanish and Italian. It is the first concept of its kind in Australia and is designed specifically for families who do not speak a foreign language in the home or those wanting to maintain a second language due to family heritage. Lessons cover content such as counting, family and animals to mimic the natural process a child experiences when learning to talk. The program is proving so popular that AlphaTykes will now offer classes each Saturday at Norwest Child Care Centre, 2 Maitland Place, Baulkham Hills starting on 17th July 2010. In Sydney, AlphaTykes currently operates two foreign language centres at Mosman and Ryde, as well as running foreign language programs in two childcare centres. AlphaTykes Centre Coordinator Sabrina Garcia said parents and carers are encouraged to stay for the session to assist their child and get a taste for the language themselves. “You can learn a new language with your child and incorporate the words and phrases into everyday language in the home. “This can be as simple as replacing one word of an English sentence with the same word in the foreign language, such as a colour, a number or an animal. This will help build your child’s memory and skill.” Ms Garcia said it doesn’t matter what language a child learns or even if they don’t become fluent; what’s important is the different way of looking at the world, openness to diverse concepts and critical thinking that learning a foreign language provides. “Bilingual children show a greater speed and flexibility in certain learning situations; indeed they grasp linguistic concepts, such as a word having several meanings, well in advance of their monolingual counterparts. “Learning a foreign language also provides an endless source of personal pleasure and satisfaction as well as a gateway to understanding the wider world,” she said. Enrolments are currently open for AlphaTykes classes in French, Spanish and Italian starting from Saturday 17th July 2010 at Norwest Child Care Centre, 2 Maitland Place, Baulkham Hills. Classes are taught in 55 minute lessons for children three to 12 years of age. Thirty minute AlphaTots classes are also offered for children 18 months to three years. Classes are held each Saturday at various times and spaces are limited. Please call 1300 61 22 88. |
